Woman cheats death after concrete slab falls on car

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman was inches away from certain death but instead escaped with just an injured left hand when a concrete slab from the construction of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) fell and hit her car today.

Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said in the 5.45pm incident, the woman was driving along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) from Sungai Besi heading towards Ampang when the one-metre square concrete fell on her car.

"The 25-year-old woman, who was driving a Proton Saga, was rescued by members of the public before being sent to the Tuanku Muhkriz Chancellor Hospital (HUKM) for treatment," he told Bernama today.

He added that incident caused traffic congestion and it took them two hours to divert traffic and reopen all the lanes.

Meanwhile, Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) in a statement last night confirmed the incident.

It said a parapet wall had fallen off the structure of the highway and hit the car on the MRR2.

"In the incident, the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"An immediate stop work order has been issued on the site and SUKE will provide full cooperation to the authorities on the matter." the statement read.

It added that an Emergency Response Team (ERT) was on location controlling the traffic and removing the parapet wall from the car.

"We regretted all the inconvenienced caused and will ensure that all safety aspects will be prioritised and enhanced for the safety of everyone," it added.
