Malaysia climbs back to 3-digit Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Covid-19 numbers continued to rise with 147 cases and three deaths recorded as of noon today.

The highest number of daily cases during the Recovery Movement Control Order period was 182, recorded on Sept 11.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 147, four cases were imported and involved three Malaysians and a foreigner, They returned from India and Indonesia.

He said of the remaining 143 which derived from local transmission, 115 cases involved Malaysians and 28 were non-Malaysians.

"Sabah continued to record the highest number of Covid-19 cases with 134, of which 105 were from the Benteng LD Cluster involving 90 locals and 15 foreigners; 8 from Laut Cluster; 8 from Bangau-Bangau Cluster; 5 from the severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) case; 3 from the health workers screening case from Semporna Hospital; 2 from Pulau Cluster; 2 from the new cluster - Udin Cluster; and 1 from the detention screening case at the Semporna District Police Headquarters in Sabah.

"Outside Sabah, 5 cases were from Kedah of which 4 from Sungai Cluster and one from the community screening. Selangor also recorded 2 cases, each from the employment screening and close contact screening to case 10,286. Both had returned from Semporna, Sabah.

"One case was reported from Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan recorded one case from the international border screening in Sabah," he said in a statement.

He also said eight cases are undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with two requiring ventilator support.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in the country rose to 10,505, with 770 active cases, he said.

On the three fatalities, Dr Noor Hisham said case 131 (or case 10,495) was a 48-year-old Indonesian woman who had a history of diabetes and high blood pressure.

The woman, he said, showed symptoms of weakness, vomiting, cough and fever on Sept 14 and was admitted to the emergency ward in Tawau Hospital on Sept 18.

"Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the ICU on Sept 19. She was pronounced dead on the same day at 10.20pm. Covid-19 screening revealed that she was tested positive on Sept 22," he said.

The second death, case 132 (or case 10,493), he said was a 54-year-old local man who had received treatment at the emergency ward in Semporna Hospital in Sabah on Sept 18 for showing symptoms of cough, fever and difficulty in breathing.

"Covid-19 screening was done on him and his condition also deteriorated and was referred to the ICU in Tawau Hospital on Sept 20. He was pronounced dead on Sept 22 and screening results showed that he tested positive."

The third fatality, case 133 (or case 9,224), was also a local man, 72, with health history of stroke.

Dr Noor Hisham said the deceased was the close contact of case 9,124, who also tested positive with Covid-19 from the Tawar Cluster.

"The third case did not show any symptoms but was however tested positive on Aug 19. He showed no signs of recovery and was transferred to the ICU at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah. He was pronounced dead on Sept 23 at 3.40am.

"The ministry would like to convey condolences to all the family members of the deceased," he said.
