Mahadi, City Hall man of 36-years now KL mayor

KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall's former planning executive director, Datuk Mahadi Che Ngah is now Kuala Lumpur mayor.

Mahadi is Kuala Lumpur 13th mayor and came back from retirement to take on the two-year tenure.

Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, who announced this today, said Mahadi's appointment was endorsed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as required by the Federal Capital Act, 1960.

Mahadi's contract came into effect today. He replaces Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, whose services as Kuala Lumpur Mayor ended on Wednesday.

Mahadi is due to receive his appointment letters on Friday at 10.30am in City Hall.

"He started his career in City Hall in 1983 as a Town Planner and his last post was as the authority's Executive Director (Planning) in 2019."

"His 36 years of service in City Hall is an advantage in terms of knowledge, skills and insightful experience in terms of administration of cities and planning policies for the authority.

"With his vast experience and leadership qualities, Mahadi is able to drive Kuala Lumpur to continue towards excellence and raise the Federal capital to become a caring city," said Annuar in a statement here today.

Mahadi has a degree in town planning from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He also pursued his master's in the field in the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

After retirement, Mahadi had also been appointed as the mayor's planning adviser.

Annuar also recorded his highest appreciation for Nor Hisham for his services.

"As a mayor he has brought about many advancements and managed the city well."

Contrary to Nor Hisham's intentions of wanting to disappear into the background as an ordinary man in KL, Annuar however said 12th Mayor of KL left behind a legacy of excellent service.

He further commended Nor Hisham who has earned a reputation as a no nonsense man for discipline, high integrity and dedication.

In an unrelated matter, Annuar said that Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain was now the Putrajaya Corp president.

Azmi, who is the former Federal Territories Ministry Socio Economic Division undersecretary will begin his two-year tenure today and replace Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, whose contract ended on Wednesday.

Aminuddin is slated to be given another role in the civil service.
