PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia registered 1,109 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the tally of infections nationwide to 61,861 – 11,307 of which are active cases.

However, in the same 24-hour period, 1,148 patients were declared recovered and discharged from hospitals across the country, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said Sabah continues to report the highest number of daily cases nationwide at 441, with 346 infections detected via the screening of clusters as well as close contacts of positive Covid-19 cases in the state.

This is followed by Selangor, which recorded 175 cases and Negri Sembilan, which registered 167.

There was also a rise in the number of infections connected to prisons – the Tembok Cluster grew by nine new cases, the Sandakan Prison Cluster (6), the Bakti Cluster (4), the Rumah Merah Cluster (4) and the Prison Remand Cluster (2).

"However, if we were to combine the cases in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan, there are 496 cases altogether, and this is more than what Sabah has recorded," he said at a daily Covid-19 press briefing at the ministry today.

Dr Noor Hisham added that 113 patients are in intensive care, with 41 requiring breathing assistance.

Two more deaths were registered today, bringing the total number of fatalities to 350. The deceased comprise one patient from Sabah and another from Labuan.
