(Updated) 1,315 new Covid-19 cases, 4 new deaths today

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 1,315 new Covid-19 cases today, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

He said the new infections comprise five import cases and 1,310 local transmissions.

There are now 11,508 active coronavirus cases in the country, he added.

Sabah, once again, is the biggest contributor to new Covid-19 cases in the country, with 476 new infections recorded. Most of the cases were detected through close contact tracing and screenings at new and existing clusters in the state.

"A total of 406 new infections in Sabah (85.3 per cent) were from existing clusters and close contacts of positive Covid-19 patients," Dr Noor Hisham said.

This is followed by Selangor with 266 cases and Kuala Lumpur (191).

He said 112 cases today involve clusters at temporary detention centres and prisons nationwide: the PTS Sibuga cluster (99 cases); Tembok cluster (8); Penjara Reman cluster (2), Rumah Merah cluster (2), and one case from Penjara Kepayan cluster.

Meanwhile, four more fatalities were reported today, bringing the death toll to 354.

All fatalities were recorded in Sabah, with one case (Case 39,785), being an 84-year-old-man with a history of high blood pressure, dyslipidemia and eye diseases. He died at the Duchess of Kent Hospital.

The other three fatalities, all foreigners, included a man (Case 35,037) who was reputedly 130-years-old. He died at the Tuaran Hospital. None of them had histories of other illnesses.

Dr Noor Hisham said 118 patients are being treated in intensive care, with 43 requiring breathing assistance.

But 1,110 patients were declared recovered and discharged from hospitals nationwide today, bringing the total number of Covid-19 recoveries to 51,314, he added.
