Kelantan floods ease slightly; evacuees down to 4,287

KOTA BARU: The flood situation in Kelantan has improved slightly, with 4,287 victims still sheltering at relief centres this morning, compared to 5,191 yesterday.

According to the state Welfare Department's website, the 4,287 victims from 1,300 families, were evacuated to 54 flood relief centres throughout the state.

As of 10am, the evacuees are at relief centres in Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Gua Musang and Jeli.

The portal also stated that Kuala Krai recorded the highest number of victims at 2,117, followed by Pasir Mas (1,552) and Tanah Merah (384).

The portal also stated that stretches of Sungai Kelantan in Machang, Kuala Krai and Tanah Merah; as well as Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang remain above their danger marks as of 10am.

Other rivers are slowly receding, but are still above their alert and warning levels.

Floods in Kelantan, which began on Sunday, have claimed two lives so far.

The victims are a 19-year-old from Rantau Panjang and 20-year-old from Pasir Mas.

Both died in separate incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday.
