12 new Covid-19 clusters detected today

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight of the 12 new Covid-19 clusters reported over the past 24 hours involved infections at work place as well as one involving farm workers who had attended a New Year's celebration in Sabah.

According to the Health Ministry's official Twitter account, the clusters detected in Sabah (2), Johor (3), Selangor (2), Melaka (1), Perak (1), Putrajaya (1), Kuala Lumpur (1) and Kelantan (1).

In Sabah, the Ladang Baturong Cluster in the Kunak district was identified as a community transmission where 54 farm workers were infected with Covid-19, including 44 new infections found today. They are believed to have contracted the infection after attending a New Year's celebration.

The 54 people in the cluster had participated in the closed door celebrations held at the farm's workers quarters at Ladang IOI Baturong 3.

The index Case 131,469 is a 42-year-old foreign man who works at the farm. He was found positive for the coronavirus on Jan 9 following a workplace screening.

To date, a total of 1,625 people have been tested.

Another workplace related cluster in Sabah was named Ladang Matamba in Lahad Datu where 20 positive cases have been reported from Jan 6 until Jan 14, including four new infections today.

This was following Covid-19 targeted screenings which had been conducted on 89 workers so far.

Among the new clusters, the Damai construction site cluster clocked the highest number of new infections at 130.

The positive cases were identified after a targeted screening conducted on workers from a construction site at Alam Damai, Cheras in Kuala Lumpur.

In Selangor, the Jalan Telok Gong cluster at Port Klang recorded 108 new cases today after workers from a factory and its workers' hostel had tested for Covid-19 since Jan 14.

Port Klang also reported another workplace cluster called Lingkaran Lintang which has 25 cases involvingworkers from a factory located at Lingkaran Sultan Hishamuddin, North Klang Straits Industrial Estate.

The cluster reported 19 new cases today.

In Putrajaya, the Restoran Putra cluster has been detected after four employees of a Precinct 9 restaurant testing positive.

The cluster's index case is a 41-year-old local man who was reported to be positive on Jan 4 and classified as Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

In Perak, the Kota Road cluster was reported after employees from a bank at Jalan Kita, Taiping and the family members of the index case, a Malaysian male aged 41, tested positive for Covid-19 on Jan 9. Two new cases were reported in the cluster today.

The Machang district in Kelantan reported 15 cases in the Pondok Hidayah cluster which involved a religious institution at Batu 31. The index case is a 65-year-old local man who was reported positive for SARI on Jan 11. He also had a travel history to Selangor on Dec 25 last year.

In Johor, three new clusters were detected. The Persiaran Selatan cluster, involving Johor Baru district, reported 61 new cases. The cluster was identified after workers from a construction site in the Southkey area were screened.

The Batu Pahat district reported 18 new cases in the Jalan Kluang cluster, involving factory workers. The index case for this cluster is a 26 year-old male worker from Bangladesh who was tested positive on Jan 11 after an symptomatic individual screening.

The Kampung Perani cluster has been identified at the Kota Tinggi district. The cluster, which involves a community at Kampung Lukut, reported 18 cases, including three new infections today.

In Melaka, there are 22 cases in the Tembok Kemus cluster in the Alor Gajah district which were identified. This was after detainees were sent to the A' Famosa satellite prison from the detention lock-ups out of the state and from the Melaka Tengah contingent headquarters prisons.
