Nine new Covid-19 clusters emerge; largest linked to Selangor supermarket

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine new Covid-19 clusters, seven of which are linked to workplace infections, were identified in Selangor, Sabah, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Seremban and Pahang today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the clusters involve a supermarket, an oil palm plantation, a public institution, two construction sites, a factory as well as a cafe at a recreational centre.

The Taman Tasik Sungai Chua cluster involves the Hulu Langat district in Selangor, which had recorded 60 positive cases as of today after a targeted screening was conducted on 147 people at a supermarket.

The name of the cluster, he said, referred to the residence of the positive patients.

The Genting Cafe cluster involves a cafe at a recreational centre in Genting Highlands, Bentong in Pahang, where the index case was reported positive on Jan 3 after a symptomatic individual screening. To date, 31 people have tested positive.

In Sabah, there are the Segamaha Complex and Jalan Bukit Bendera clusters involving the Kinabatangan, Kota Kinabalu, Papar and Beaufort districts.

In the Segamaha cluster in Kinabatangan, the index case was reported positive on Jan 16 and 58 workers from the oil palm plantation have since been infected.

As for the Jalan Bukit Bendera cluster in Kota Kinabalu, Papar and Beaufort involving a public institution, the index case tested positive on Jan 7 and 20 more new infections were subsequently confirmed.

The Jalan Suria cluster in Johor Baru, Johor involves a private medical centre where the index case was detected positive on Jan 17. To date, 24 individuals have been found positive.

The Jalan Nipah cluster in the Titiwangsa district in Kuala Lumpur was detected following a targeted screening held at a construction site. The positive cases were detected today where 29 workers had been infected.

The Era Duta construction site cluster involves the Kepong district in Kuala Lumpur where 20 people were found positive in a targeted screening which began today at Jalan Dutamas.

In Kelantan, the Pulau Lima cluster was detected, which refers to the residential locality of the index case, who was found positive on Jan 10 after a symptomatic individual screening. Nine persons have been infected so far.

The Jalan TJ Cluster in the Seremban district involves a factory worker who was found positive on Jan 7 after a symptomatic individual screening test. Up to today, 39 persons have tested positive.
