54 nabbed for attempting inter-state, inter-district travel without permission

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-four people who were attempting to travel inter-state or inter-district without permission from the authorities were nabbed on Saturday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the 54 were among 550 offenders who had flouted the Movement Control Order's (MCO) standard operating procedures (SOP).

He said other offences were failure to wear face masks (130), failure to provide equipment to record patrons' details upon entry to premises (112) and not observing physical distancing (68).

The police also detained 44 people for operating businesses without permission or exceeding permitted hours, and 93 for other offences.

"Of the total, 499 people were compounded, 42 remanded, and nine more were granted bail," he said in a statement today.

Also on Saturday, the compliance operation task force led by the police conducted 57,350 inspections nationwide.

Among the locations checked were 3,731 supermarkets, 5,432 restaurants, 2,135 hawker stalls, 1,347 factories, 3,226 banks and 552 government offices nationwide.

Ismail Sabri, who is also the Defence Minister said 54 illegal immigrants were nabbed in Ops Benteng yesterday, adding that two boats and five land vehicles were seized.

He said the operations involving the police, armed forces, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Malaysian Border Security Agency and other security agencies mounted 518 roadblocks nationwide.
