Orang Asli man killed, possibly trampled by elephant

JOHOR BARU: An Orang Asli man was killed after he was believed to have been trampled by a wild elephant in the Sungai Teresap Forest Reserve, Endau, near Mersing, on Wednesday.

Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director, Salman Saaban said the department received a report on the incident at about 12.15pm, following which five personnel from the department went to the Endau Health Clinic, where the victim was taken to.

The victim was identified as Din Janja, 61, from Kampung Orang Asli Labong in Endau.

"According to his son, Endra Din, 18, he and his father entered the forest reserve area at about 8.30am to go fishing when they bumped into an elephant, which then attacked them.

"Endra managed to flee, but his father was attacked by the elephant," he said in a statement today.

Salman said a post mortem would be conducted to determine the actual cause of Din's death.

He said a team from the department also went to the scene and confirmed the presence of the pachyderm there.

"The elephant is believed to be from the Endau Rompin National Park and is a single elephant which had split from its group. The location of the incident is indeed a place where wild elephants roam," he added. -- BERNAMA
