KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia clocked a record 5,718 recoveries over the last 24 hours, more than double that of new infections, which came in at 2,720.

The new cases, all of which were local transmissions, represented a slight increase from the 2,176 cases the previous day.

With recoveries trumping new infections for the fifth day in a row, the number of active cases has now dropped to 44,129.

The 24-hour period, sadly, also saw eight deaths, bringing the cumulative death toll to 983.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, of the new infections, Selangor alone accounted for 1,300 (47.8 per cent), followed by Johor with 451 cases (16.6 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur with 381 cases (11.7 per cent).

Perlis is the only state that did not report any new cases, while Labuan reported only one new coronavirus case.

Dr Noor Hisham also said all the fatalities were Malaysians except for one foreigner. The Malaysians all had chronic illnesses, including a 74-year-old man with Parkinson's disease who died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Of the active cases, 253 patients are currently undergoing treatment at Intensive Care Units (ICU), including 118 patients who have been placed on respiratory support.
