Storm damages houses in Kuala Kurau

PARIT BUNTAR: "We thought lightning had struck our home, but it was actually strong winds which damaged our roof."

This was how 58-year-old Baharudin Osman described the storm which hit Kampung Telok Pial Tengah, Kuala Kurau, here, yesterday.

He said the 5pm incident occurred after a heavy downpour, which was followed by a thunder storm.

"When the weather deteriorated, my wife, our two children and I quickly entered the house. Not long after that, we heard a loud bang.

"We thought lightning had struck our roof. But it was actually the roof over our living room being lifted and folded due to the strong winds," he said, adding that he was thankful none of his family members were injured during the incident.

He was speaking to reporters today during a visit by Kuala Kurau assemblyman Datuk Abdul Yunus Jamhari and representatives of the Kerian District and Land Office and Welfare Department.

Meanwhile, Yunus said three houses, including two in Kampung Parit Sungai Burung in the Kuala Kurau state constituency, were damaged in the storm yesterday.

He said the authorities have gone to the ground with the Kerian District and Land Office and Welfare Department to hand over aid under the district's emergency relief fund.

"We will also look into other forms of assistance to help the victims," he said.
