Seven new Covid-19 clusters identified

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry today identified seven new Covid-19 clusters – four at workplaces and three in the community.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham said the four workplace clusters were Sungai Kluang Satu cluster in Penang; Jalan Ismail Sultan cluster (Johor); Batu Lima Jalan Sibuga cluster (Sabah) and Taman Bukit Pantai (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor).

Two of the workplace clusters involved education centres, a factory and a supermarket.

The Sungai Kluang Satu cluster originated from a factory in Hilir Sungai Kluang 1, Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, Penang.

"This workplace cluster involves the Barat Daya, Timur Laut, Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan districts in Penang.

"The cluster has so far logged 79 positive cases out of the 1,769 individuals screened," he said in a statement.

The Jalan Ismail Sultan cluster involving workers of a supermarket in Jalan Ismail Sultan, Gelang Patah, Johor Baru has 36 positive cases to date.

He said the Batu Lima Jalan Sibuga cluster involved students and workers of an education centre in Sandakan. Eight out of 144 individuals screened have tested positive for Covid-19 to date.

The Taman Bukit Pantai cluster also involved students of an education centre in Taman Bukit Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.

"This cluster involved the Lembah Pantai district here and Petaling district in Selangor.

"The index case of this cluster, case 353,602, was found positive on April 7 via symptomatic individual screening. Of the 74 individuals screened, 20 have tested positive so far," he said.

The three community clusters recorded were the Sungai Gemuan and Disso clusters in Sarawak; and Sim-Sim cluster in Sabah.

The Sungai Gemuan cluster involved a community in Meradong district, which has reported 39 positive cases. The Disso cluster in Seratok distrct has logged 24 cases so far.

The Sim-Sim cluster, which involves a community in Jalan Buli Sim Sim, Sandakan, has recorded 15 people testing positive for the virus out of the 21 individuals screened so far.

Dr Noor Hisham said the total number of active clusters in the country currently stands at 342 after 13 clusters ended today: the Jalan Tempua, Jalan Pelepas Dua, Teknologi Tenggara, Parit Penyengat Darat, Sri Jelutung, Kampung Columbia, Jalan Payamanis, Jalan Cheras, Jalan Duyong, Lorong Kilang, Jalan Zamrud Construction Site, Jalan Bukit Kemuning, and Jalan Pantai Construction Site clusters.
