4,498 new Covid-19 cases recorded, highest since Feb 4

KUALA LUMPUR: Covid-19 cases continued to rise in Malaysia with 4,498 new infections recorded today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the total number of coronavirus cases in Malaysia now stood at 432,425, since the pandemic began.

This is the first time Malaysia recorded more than 4,000 cases since Feb 4.

Active cases are 34,789 while 22 more deaths related to the virus have been recorded.

Of the new cases today, Dr Noor Hisham said only five were imported involving one Malaysian and four foreigners while 93 per cent of local transmissions were Malaysians.

"Today, Selangor reported the highest total of new cases at 1,424, where 81.8 per cent of the infections were from clusters and closed contact screenings.

"This is followed by Sarawak that logged 750 cases and Kuala Lumpur (436)," he said.

Other states with three-digit cases were Johor (327) and Penang (313), Kelantan (297), Kedah (209), Negri Sembilan (188) and Sabah (153).

On the 22 fatalities today, 20 were Malaysians and two foreigners.

Dr Noor Hisham said there were 3,449 recoveries today, making it 396,004 (91.6 per cent) to date.
