Covid-19: Melaka's largest electronics factory shut down after almost 300 workers test positive

MELAKA: An electronics factory in Batu Berendam here has been ordered to shut down for a week following the spread of Covid-19 among its workers.

State Health and Anti-Drugs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said the move was necessary after 299 workers from the electronics factory – the largest in Melaka – as well as some of their family members, tested positive for Covid-19.

"The immediate closure will enable the state Health Department to launch a further investigation on the cause of the spread, as well as conduct close contact tracing," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Rahmad said the state administrative centre in Kompleks Seri Negeri was also ordered to cease operations for a week from May 31 after seven Covid-19 cases were detected in the location.

He said the shutdown will enable the authorities to conduct close contact tracing, testing as well as sanitisation work by the Health Department as well as the state Fire and Rescue Department.

"To date, seven positive cases have been detected. Six cases were from Blok Bentara (Finance) while the remaining case was from Blok Laksamana.

"A total of 178 screenings have been carried out on their colleagues and close contacts. However, the origin of the infection has yet to be determined. The state Health Department is still conducting its investigation."
