12,930 Covid-19 recoveries today, highest daily recovery recorded

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reported 12,930 Covid-19 recoveries today, which is the highest daily recovery tally recorded since the pandemic hit the country last year.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the number of recoveries reported with the ministry today brings the cumulative number of patients who have recovered from the virus to 890,742.

The daily Covid-19 cases, however, remained in the 17,000 threshold for two straight days today after the ministry detected 17,170 new infections over the past 24 hours.

This is the third time the number of daily Covid-19 cases in the country breached the 17,000-mark with the highest at 17,405 yesterday (July 28) and 17,045 on July 25.

"The new infections detected nationwide as of noon today brought the cumulative figure to 1,078,646," said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement.

Selangor, he said, remains the state with the highest number of cases at 7,163 followed by Kuala Lumpur at 2,138. Also recording four-digit new cases are Kedah (1,212) and Johor (1,054).

Nine other states recorded three-digits in new cases. The states are Negri Sembilan (884) followed by Sabah (772), Pahang (638), Kelantan (615), Perak (596), Sarawak (582), Penang (554), Terengganu (437) and Melaka (416).

Dr Noor Hisham said 383 cases involved Category Three until Category Five symptoms in which they developed lung infections, required oxygen assistance and were critical.

"However, this is the situation based on the current clinical cases of new patients who have just been diagnosed with Covid-19.

"There are cases of patients who continue to remain in the same category. However, there are also patients whose health conditions improved to a less severe category," he said.

Malaysia's Covid-19 death toll, he said, rose to 8,725 after 174 fatalities were reported today to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC).

He also said there were 179,179 active cases being treated in healthcare facilities across the country.

"There are 1,043 cases in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) with 531 patients intubated," said Dr Noor Hisham.
