RM1.1 billion for training and up-skilling programmes

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has proposed RM1.1 billion allocation under the 2022 Budget to carry out training and up-skilling programmes to produce a more skilled workforce.

Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government was planning to train 220,000 trainees under the programme.

"Among the initiative that will be implemented under this programme included a guarantee of employment," said Tengku Zafrul when tabling the 2022 Budget.

The government, he said, would also intensify cooperation with industry players to carry out up-skilling programmes with focus given to digital skills such as the Global Online Workforce (GLOW) under the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

To demonstrate how this initiative would benefit the people, Tengku Zafrul cited an example in the form of one "Puan Zeti Haiza".

"Puan Zeti is the manager of a tourism agency in Melaka. Without influx of foreign tourist, the income of her agency is affected.

"Through GLOW under MDEC, Puan Zeti could venture into freelancing on online platforms to generate income from the comfort of her home and expand services to foreign countries," he said.

Based on the outcome of the programme implemented during the implementation of the 2021 Budget, he said 85 per cent of the trainees who were enrolled under the programme managed to secure employment opportunities.
