MRT trains, stations to showcase anti-corruption posters

KUALA LUMPUR: Mass rail transit (MRT) trains and stations will showcase anti-corruption posters for the next four months to cultivate integrity and accountability among commuters.

Starting next year, the external body of MRT trains will also be wrapped with posters featuring anti-corruption messages.

This initiative will be implemented as part of a joint campaign by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) to raise awareness on corruption among public transport commuters.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said, instilling good values to curb corruption through posters is an effective medium for public transport hubs such as the Klang Valley.

"Since Klang Valley progressed to Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan, almost 50,000 commuters ride on MRT trains to their destinations every day. This means some 1.45 million commuters will be viewing the posters each month.

"A perception-based study on the effectiveness of MACC's anti-corruption actions in 2020 found that 44.5 per cent of respondents gained information about corruption from visual displays on billboards and posters.

"This initiative is also in line with the National Anti-Corruption Plan 2019-2023 (NACP) and the ISO 37001:2016 Anti- Bribery Management System (ABMS).

"As a key government policy, all parties should support NACP as activities (related to the policy) can be implemented in various forms, according to the entity's nature of business," he said, while launching the campaign at the Muzium Negara MRT Station, here, today.

Azam reminded top management of companies to cultivate good governance and curb bribery practices within their companies.

This, he said, would prevent them from being charged for corporate liability under the Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009 (Amendment 2018) that came into force in June 2020.

MACC, he said, also offers consultation services to companies to strengthen their systems and procedures, conducts corruption risk assessments, and develops Organisational Anti-Corruption Plans.

During the ceremony, Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd senior general manager Mohd Hamim Imam Mustain officially handed the ISO 37001:2016 certificate to MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim after MRT Corp passed a recertification audit by Sirim last month.

Zarif said, this marked the fourth consecutive year that MRT Corp has cleared a recertification audit since 2018.
