Non-stop heavy rains cause Golok river to rise above alert mark

KOTA BARU: Continous heavy rains since this morning resulted in Golok river at Rantau Panjang to rise above its alert level.

As of 7.15am, the river water-level was measured at 7.31 metres (m) which is 0.31m above its alert mark of 7m.

According to the state welfare flood portal, other rivers in the state have also shown slight increase but remained below their alert levels.

Following the non-stop heavy rains, several low-lying areas in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang were inundated by floodwaters.

The portal also stated that no one was evacuated as of 7.30pm.

There are more than 500 flood relief centres throughout Kelantan including about 20 centres for Covid-19 patients, ready to accept evacuees when the need arises.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a warning issued today, said strong winds from the north east direction could potentially lead to continuous rainfall and cause floods in low-lying areas.

It stated several areas in Kelantan, Pahang and Johor as well as the whole of Terengganu can expect heavy rainfall today and tomorrow.

The department said nine districts in Kelantan - namely Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai - and the whole of Terengganu have been placed on high alert.
