Sarawak election: Dr Sim to take on Dr Yii in Batu Kawah

KUCHING: It will be a four-cornered fight between Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), DAP, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Sarawak People's Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) for the Batu Kawah seat.

Election Commission (EC) Returning officer Ita Ling made the announcement at the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), after nomination closed at 10am.

He said GPS candidate Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian would be going up against Dr Kelvin Yii of DAP, PBK candidate Chai Kueh Khun and Aspirasi candidate Fong Pau Teck.

Earlier, Dr Sim arrived at the nomination centre at the Padawan Municipal Council here at about 7.30am.

The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president was the first candidate to arrive for the nomination, followed by Dr Yii, who is also the Bandar Kuching MP.

Chai is a senior electrical and electronics engineer, while Fong was formerly a DAP Pujut assemblyman.

He won the seat in the 2011 state polls, but was sacked by the party due to disciplinary issues in 2013.

In 2016, Dr Sim wrested the Batu Kawah seat from the DAP after defeating incumbent Christina Chiew Wang See and independent candidate Liu Thian Leong in the 11th Sarawak state election.

He polled 6,414 votes to win by a majority of 2,085 votes. Chiew garnered 4,329 votes while Liu, 1,109 votes.
