KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is reported to be in stable condition after being admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Thursday (Jan 20).

His daughter Datin Marina Mahathir said the Langkawi MP is responding well to treatment.

"Since the last two days, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was treated at the IJN following the successful elective procedure on Jan 8.

"He is currently in a stable condition and responding well to the treatment.

"Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and family are hoping that Malaysians will pray for his speedy and full recovery," she said in a statement.

Earlier today, it was reported that Dr Mahathir was admitted to the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

At 5.30pm, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri was seen entering the hospital and spent around 30 minutes at the specialist heart facility.

It was also reported that IJN will be issuing a statement on the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air founder and chairman today.

As of Press time, no official statement from the hospital was issued.

Earlier this month, the IJN said in a statement said Dr Mahathir was admitted to the hospital for an elective medical procedure.

On Dec 16, 2021, Dr Mahathir was admitted to IJN for a full medical check-up and further observation. He was discharged on Dec 22.

Dr Mahathir previously underwent two heart bypass operations in 1989 and 2007.
