Dr Mahathir showing signs of improvement, says daughter

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is being warded at the National Heart Institute (IJN), is showing improvement following his follow-up treatment to an elective medical procedure he underwent on Jan 8.

Datin Marina Mahathir said her father is showing progress and even managed to joke with his family members.

"His appetite has improved. He also joked with his family members who were by his side," she said.

She said Dr Mahathir was informed of the well-wishes conveyed by many, including foreign leaders as well as members of the public.

"He and the family are moved by the wishes and thanked everyone who prayed for his speedy recovery.

"He has also asked the public not to be too worried about his health," she said in a statement today.

Marina said Dr Mahathir will continue to receive treatment at IJN under the supervision of local experts.

IJN, she said, has not allowed any visitors for him save immediate family members.

Dr Mahathir, 96, was admitted to IJN last Saturday for a follow-up treatment on an elective procedure he underwent on Jan 8.

On Dec 16 last year, he was admitted to IJN for a full medical check-up and further observation. He was discharged on Dec 22.

Dr Mahathir had previously undergone two heart bypass operations in 1989 and 2007.
