Sabah Wildlife officers arrest man for possessing animal body parts

KENINGAU: The Sabah Wildlife Department arrested a man for possessing animals and animal products of species protected under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.

At 12.40pm on Saturday, the department raided the 52-year-old man's house in Kampung Tuawon Trusmadi.

They found four paws and nine teeth of a sun bear; pangolin scales; a hornbill skull; antlers; seven porcupine spines, six live blue-crowned hanging parrots and two live turtles.

State director Augustine Tuuga said continuous intelligence over the past month successfully led to the raid.

The arrest was a joint operation together with the police and Sabah Forestry Departments.

The suspect was detained to assist investigations under Section 41 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 for the possession of animals and animal products.

Sun bears and pangolins are fully protected animals in Sabah.

Keeping animals or animal products without valid permission is an offence and those found guilty can be sentenced to a fine of not less than RM50,000 and not more than RM250,000 and imprisonment for not less than one year and not more than five years under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment.

Augustine also reminded the public that the department through its Intelligence Unit constantly monitored illegal or criminal activities against wildlife through social media.

He also thanked and urged members of the public who have any information related to wildlife crime like this, to inform the department immediately.
