SPM workshop: Education Minister says matter resolved amicable

NIBONG TEBAL: The issue involving a school in Johor, which allegedly held an overnight SPM workshop for only Muslim students recently, has been resolved amicably.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said discussions had been held with various quarters not to prolong the issue.

She said the focus should be on the students, who would be sitting for their SPM examination soon.

"We don't want these students disturbed. Focus should be given on their examination. Let us wish them every success in their examination.

"However, let me reiterate that we will not tolerate if such an incident happened again," she said when met at the Jawi constituency Chinese New Year Open House at Dewan Serbaguna Jawi here today.

Fadhlina also reiterated that there was no discrimination in the country's education system.

"We have no space for any form of discrimination," she said.

The Education Ministry recently denied that there were discriminatory elements involved in the workshop.

In a statement following an investigation by the Johor Education Department, the ministry had said that the school planned a separate examination workshop for students who did not attend the first one on Jan 19 and 20 at a hotel.

The workshop was conducted for 30 candidates who had failed their Bahasa Melayu, History and other subjects.

The workshop was held separately to avoid disruption to candidates who were preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The ministry was informed that a similar workshop for other candidates had been planned from Jan 26 to 27.

A Twitter user had claimed that a school in Johor Baru held an overnight SPM examination workshop for Muslim students.

She said parents were told about the workshop by their children, who found out from their classmates that it had taken place before the Chinese New Year break.

Following the incident, the Education Ministry had been told not to shrug off its responsibility by rights group Pusat Komas, which urged Fadhlina to make a stand and address the issue of alleged racism and racial discrimination in schools.
