Tragic accident claims life of student enroute to university, mother and siblings injured [Updated]

KAMPAR: A mother's wish to send her two sons to further their studies at a university in Cyberjaya was dashed after they were involved in an accident today, killing one of her sons.

The mother, who was travelling in a Proton Savvy with her four children, collided with a trailer at KM301.5 off the North-South Expressway (southbound) at about 6.15am today.

The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Zweill Haikal Ghazali, 18, while his mother, Asnoni Otnman, 49, who hails from Taman Kumbar Permai in Teluk Kumbar, Penang, suffered leg injuries.

The accident also caused Asnoni's three other children to suffer injuries.

Muhammad Danial Haikal, 24, suffered bleeding in his stomach, while Muhammad Darweiss Haikal, 20 and Muhammad Uwaiss Ryeqal, 10, both had minor injuries.

District police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Nazri Daud said the car Muhammad Danial Haikal drove was going to Universiti Malaya (UM) Campus in Cyberjaya to register his brothers, Muhammad Zweill and Muhammad Darweiss.

"Initial investigation found that the car was believed to have lost control and hit the back side of the trailer, driven by a 50-year-old man.

"Upon approaching the scene, the Proton Savvy is suspected to have failed to control the vehicle and hit the back side of the trailer on the left lane.

"They were on their way to register the deceased and his brother to UM Campus in Cyberjaya today," he said in a statement today.

Following the crash, Mohamad Nazri said that Muhammad Zweill was killed instantly due to severe head injuries.

"The injured victims were taken to the Tapah Hospital for further treatment while the deceased was also taken to the same hospital for post-mortem today.

"The driver of the trailer escaped unhurt, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
