Driving against traffic flow: BMW crashes into Bezza along expressway

GEORGE TOWN: A BMW driver, who was driving against the flow of traffic along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway past midnight today, crashed into a Perodua Bezza.

The incident resulted in the female driver of the BMW and the male driver of the Bezza to sustain injuries.

Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said police came across several footage of the white BMW, being driven against the flow of traffic, on social media today.

The BMW was heading towards the Penang Bridge from the city centre.

Checks showed the incident happened about 12.30am near the Penang Bridge exit, heading towards the city centre.

The male victim of the Bezza, who was heading towards Mount Erskine from Sungai Petani, had collided with the BMW, driven against the flow of traffic by the female driver.

As a result, the Bezza driver sustained abdominal pain and is treated at the Penang Hospital. The BMW driver sustained chest pain and is being treated at a private hospital, he said.

Soffian said police have yet to record statements from both drivers.

The case is probed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Soffian urged those with information to contact the nearest police station or investigating officer Inspector Mohd Azli Khairil Mat Lazin at 019-5946806 to assist in investigation.

Motorists must observe traffic rule at all times to prevent from any untoward incident, he said.
