Tiger threats only faced by Kelantan Orang Asli

KOTA BARU: Only the Orang Asli community in Kelantan are facing threats from tigers.

Kelantan/Terengganu Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) director Zarina Razlan said the Orang Asli community in Terengganu did not face similar a threat as their settlements were situated on the outskirts of town.

"There is no tiger issue in Terengganu but in Kelantan, several tiger threats have been reported over the past years, with the latest in July.

"Efforts have been made by Jakoa as well as the Wlidlife Department to solve the issue," she told reporters here today.

Zarina said Pos Bihai and Pos Belatim, both in Gua Musang, have been identified as the highest Orang Asli settlements to have recorded tiger threats.

"Jakoa and other agencies under the federal government as well as the state government's agencies have been helping the Orang Asli people especially those who were affected by the tiger threats.

"The agencies include Health and Registration Departments as well as the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK)," she said.

Zarina said the Orang Asli who were affected by the latest tiger threat are remaining at home.

"They are still staying at their homes and are not moving to other areas as the situation is still under control," she added.

She was speaking to reporters when met at the MAIK office after the handing over of food baskets from MAIK to Jakoa.

Presenting the donation was MAIK president Tengku Tan Sri Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz.

About RM73,000 worth of food baskets were donated by MAIK to Jakoa.
