BENTONG: An electrical appliance store was completely damaged in a fire which razed two shophouses along Jalan Ah Peng near here yesterday.
Fire gutted the double-storey premises, which were about half a century old, at about 10.20pm. No casualties were reported in the incident.
Bentong Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Shafie Sulong said the department was alerted about the incident at 10.26pm.
"Twenty firemen from the Bentong and Karak fire stations along with 21 volunteer firemen from Kampung Perting were deployed to the scene. Four traffic policemen helped to control the traffic as the incident occurred along the main road in Bentong town centre.
"Firemen managed to bring the fire under control in less than an hour later before the operations ended about 12.35am. The cause of the fire is still being investigated," he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Shafie said the fire is believed to have started from the electrical store before it spread to the neghbouring unit through the roof's wooden frame.
"The electrical store was 100 per cent burnt while the premises next door was about 50 per cent damaged on the upper floor," he said.
