Fatal road accident caused by 'telekung' getting stuck in motorcycle wheel

KUALA PILAH: A 64-year-old motorcyclist was killed while his wife, who was riding pillion was injured when the couple's machine skidded as they were headed to a mosque to perform magrib prayers near here last night.

The 7pm incident in Jalan Juasseh Terusan Seberang happened when the motorcyclist lost control of the machine when it skidded after the 60-year-old pillion rider's 'telekung' (prayer scarf) got entangled with the rear wheel of the motorcycle.

Kuala Pilah district police chief Superintendent Amran Mohd Gani confirmed that the motorcyclist died while receiving treatment at Kuala Pilah Hospital at around 3.50am today.

"A road accident involving a motorcycle occurred on Jalan Juasseh Terusan Seberang near Masjid Kariah Juasseh Seberang at around 7pm last night."

Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident happened as a Yamaha 135 LC motorcycle, ridden by a 64-year-old man and 60-year-old woman, who was the pillion rider, were heading to the mosque from their home to perform the maghrib prayers." Amran said in a statement today.

Upon arriving at the scene, the pillion rider's 'telekung' got stuck in the rear wheel, causing the motorcycle to lose control, resulting in the machine skidding, he said, adding both victims fell on the road and rendering them unconscious.

He said the couple was rushed to Kuala Pilah Hospital for further treatment.

The Kuala Pilah district police headquarters received a phone call from the hospital's forensic unit at 3.53am today, informing them that the motorcyclist had died while receiving treatment in the Red Zone, he said.

"Meanwhile, the woman pillion rider suffered injuries to her face, had her lips stitched and suffered multiple broken teeth.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," said Amran.
