PM agrees there should be no delays in Kg Sungai Baru development project, says Titiwangsa MP

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed that there should be no delay in the Kampung Sungai Baru development project which was postponed after almost six years.

Titiwangsa member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani confirmed the matter, saying that he was informed about the matter last month.

The development in the Kampung Sungai Baru area, said Johari, had stalled after five per cent of the apartment owners did not move out, whereas 95 per cent of them have already moved out and are waiting for a new house from the developer.

Johari said apartment owners who did not agree to move out are currently resolving issues regarding compensation in court.

"The extension was given by the Prime Minister's Office only until Oct 31 only. After that, there will be no more extensions.

"And if the residents want to get a little more (of the land compensation from the developer) there's no problem, they can settle it in court.

"I have also instructed the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to make the necessary coordination and arrangement for the Sungai Baru flat residents who have no place to stay."

Johari also slammed the developers as they did not get the full consensus of all the residents before commencing the project.

"Now the issue with the developer is that they made a mistake in this redevelopment project.

"They told everyone to move even if it didn't get 100 per cent approval.

"They should have waited for it first but they had instead already moved people out at that point. If we can, we want the developer to complete this project immediately," he told reporters after handing out Deepavali donations to 700 families of the Indian community in the Titiwangsa parliamentary constituency in Taman Maluri, here, today.

Last February, the residents of Kampung Sungai Baru submitted a memorandum requesting the government to cancel the postponement of the development project in the area as announced by the prime minister.

The majority of residents want the redevelopment of the area, which has been delayed for around six years, to continue.

The Kampung Sungai Baru land acquisition issue involves 67 terrace house units and 14 apartment blocks known as Sungai Baru Apartments with the land acquisition process starting in 2016.

Some residents, especially residents of terrace houses, did not agree with the compensation rate of RM400 per square foot set by the Land and Mines Office of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (PTGWKL).
