RM6.9mil for pilot project of evacuation centre in Pitas, Sabah

KOTA MARUDU: Sabah Disaster Management Committee has agreed to implement the pilot project worth RM6.9 million for the construction of a Permanent Disaster Evacuation Center in Pitas.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions) Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the centre could accommodate approximately 500 victims.

"The centre will have a better environment and facilities compared to the existing temporary evacuation centres.

"It will also be equipped with suitable facilities such as accommodation halls, toilets, bathrooms, laundry areas, kitchens and dining areas, a special space for women, administrative and officer rooms, food and basic needs storage, treatment rooms, and a prayer room," he said in a statement.

The Papar member of parliament also said that the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will also collaborate with Sabah Disaster Management Committee for the implementation of minor repair and upgrading projects for toilets, bathrooms, and storage in existing temporary centres in stages.

In preparation for the expected northeast monsoon (MTL) between this month and March next year, a total of 8,481 PPS has been identified nationwide, including 332 in the state of Sabah.
