COP28: King, queen to undertake special visit to UAE

KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah will undertake a Special Visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Nov 29 to Dec 4.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) in a statement said the visit is in conjunction with 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) that will take place from Nov 30 to Dec 12 in Dubai.

Their Majesties will be accompanied by the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

The royal entourage also comprises Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail as well as senior government officials.

During the visit, Al-Sultan Abdullah is scheduled to attend the World Climate Action Summit and High-Level Segment for Heads of State and Government.

According to the statement, His Majesty has also consented to launch the Malaysian Pavilion and grace a ceremony of exchange of documents involving Malaysian companies and their counterparts on the sidelines of COP28.

The King has also consented to confer the country's highest honorary awards to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and members of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi.

Al-Sultan Abdullah and Sheikh Mohamed will also grace a ceremony of exchange of documents relating to US$8 billion investment by UAE's Masdar in renewable energy in Malaysia.

This follows the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Masdar which was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to UAE on Oct 5-6.

UAE is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner, export destination and import source in West Asia. Malaysia's total trade with the UAE was recorded at RM38.73 billion (US$8.79 billion) in 2022, an increase of 73.5 per cent from RM22.23 billion (US$5.39 billion) recorded in the preceding year. --BERNAMA
