Cabinet reshuffle could see second finance minister appointed

KUALA LUMPUR: The impending cabinet reshuffle, set to be announced tomorrow, may see the appointment of a second finance minister.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also currently holds the position of finance minister, and it is understood that there is every likelihood that he will appoint a second minister to help shoulder the responsibility.

It is understood that, should Anwar appoint a second minister, it will be someone who is not a politician.

Two names have been bandied about in Putrajaya, the first being a senior officer in an international financial institution.

This officer has vast experience in financial institutions in Malaysia and abroad.

The second is currently chief executive officer of a statutory body under the purview of the Finance Ministry.

It is understood that, should the latter be named as second finance minister, there would have to be some movements within the ministry and the statutory body.

Such movements would be announced sometime after the appointment is made.

It was reported earlier that the cabinet reshuffle will take place tomorrow, with a swearing-in ceremony to be conducted in the afternoon.
