AG's decision to charge senior cop with murder of schoolboy shows police's transparency - IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The decision made by the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to charge the senior police officer with murder of a teenager in a road crash in Perak shows the police's transparency in carrying out investigation on the case, said Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

In welcoming the decision, he said the force dutifully conducted an investigation in accordance with the law based on the findings gathered by the investigating officer.

"It is the wisdom of AGC in making an assessment based on the investigation carried out by the investigating officer.

"The case was handled well and with credibility by the (Perak) police chief and Ipoh district police chief, along with the investigation team," he told Berita Harian today.

He said the senior officer would be suspended from duty as soon as the charge is read in court tomorrow.

He expressed hope that the case served as a lesson to all policemen, reminding them against abusing their badges and tarnishing the force's reputation.

It was reported that Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, in a statement tonight, said the suspect will be charged in the Ipoh Magistrates Court tomorrow.

"The Attorney General's Chambers refers to a traffic accident case on Dec 15, 2023 near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jati, Jalan Taman Jati 1, Ipoh, Perak, involving a car driven by a senior police officer and a motorcycle ridden by a 17-year-old student, causing the latter's death.

"After studying the outcome of the investigation and statements contained in the investigation papers, the department finds sufficient material for a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code," read the statement.

Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, 17, who was riding a motorcycle was killed after he was hit by the 44-year-old suspect driving a Perodua Ativa.

The suspect, a police deputy superintendent stationed at the Kedah police contingent headquarters, allegedly left the scene shortly after the incident.

It was reported that an altercation earlier took place between the teenager and the suspect. The teen was allegedly revving his motorcycle engine, which incurred the suspect's wrath.

The suspect, in his car, allegedly chased the teen for almost a kilometre before crashing into him from behind.

Due to the impact, Zaharif fell and was dragged almost five metres. He died at the scene.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital indicated the cause of death as chest and abdomen injuries from the incident.
