Police: Installation of iron sheet piling at landslide area will take two weeks

PUCHONG: It will at least take two weeks to complete the installation of iron sheet piling at the landslide site here to avoid any further untowards incidents.

Serdang District police chief Assistant Commissioner A. Anbalagan told reporters at the scene that 74 out 375 iron piles have been planted after two days of operation.

He said there are two types of iron piles with different measurements - 9m and 12m.

"It's going to take at least two weeks according to the contractor and it also depends on the weather.

"As of today, 74 iron piles have been planted, and we need 375 iron piles to fill the 150-square-metre (that was affected)," he said at Jalan Wawasan, which is about 50m away from the landslide location.

Anbalagan assured there was no significant soil movement detected by the Mineral and Geoscience Department that would further risk any potential erosion.

"The relevant authorities will provide an update on any information its receives about soil movement," he said, when asked if authorities have any contingency plans in the matter.

He said further risk assessment will be conducted after contractors finished planting the iron sheet pilings. This will eventually determine if it was safe for residents to return to their homes.

When asked on whether the preliminary report will be out soon, Anbalagan said the relevant authorities are completing it.

On Sunday, seven houses along Jalan Wawasan in Puchong near here were vacated after a landslide occurred in front of one of the units.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail had said they were informed at 7.26pm about the landslide involving a 50-metre-wide area.

On Monday, the Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) said the site where the landslide occurred is an embankment with a sloping base that lacks retaining structures. It said the area also has water channels and drainage structures at the bottom. (https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2023/12/991938/puchong-landslide-soil...)

It had also said field observations revealed pre-existing cracks in building structures such as floors and retaining walls.

This indicated that soil movement had occurred earlier before the landslide incident.
