Authorities raid Forest City shop over illegal sale of controlled drugs

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Health Department today raided a grocery store in Forest City suspected of selling controlled drugs illegally.

Department director Mokhtar Pungut @ Ahmad said the raid was conducted at 4.10pm following reports that the drugs were being sold without the need for a prescription from licensed medical practitioners.

"We did not find any evidence of Azithromycin (a type of antibiotics) being sold, as per the complaint.

"However, officers found two unregistered products containing poison and another traditional product, which wasn't registered with the Health Ministry.

"The products, valued at RM642, were seized for further investigation," he said.

He said the ministry would continue to monitor such premises to ensure that only licensed and registered products are sold.

Social media users on X had previously claimed that a shop in Forest City was brazenly selling controlled pharmaceuticals without requiring the buyer to produce a prescription.

Antibiotics known as Azithromycin, they claimed, were openly being sold at RM15 a packet.

As of Nov 2023, a total of 207 premises in Johor had been raided and 122,485 items seized, valued at RM1.4 million in total.

Mokhtar said 1,067 premises were also inspected statewide.
