Passport-free clearance system is a game-changer for Johor-Singapore economic ties, say trade exco

JOHOR BARU: The proposed passport-free QR code clearance system in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) will contribute immensely to the state's economy.

Earlier today, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and his Singapore counterpart Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the special economic to strengthen economic connectivity between Johor and Singapore.

In a joint-statement the ministers said a passport-free QR code system is being explored to speed up immigration clearance for land travel between Singapore and Malaysia,

Meanwhile, State Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the republic is Johor's strategy partner and also an important trading partner, contributing to the tune of RM200million in the first quarter (Q3) last year.

"Our strategic partner contributed about 35.6 percent of our total trade volume, which is a testimony to our close trade and economy link.

"Since the establishment of JS-SEZ, we have been looking for mutually beneficial mechanisms to further boost business ventures and make it easier for Singaporeans to conduct their operations in Johor.

"Easier ways to move goods and faster travel-efficiency between both regions will play a crucial role in attracting more investors," he said, when contacted today.

Lee welcomes both the government's readiness to implement a hassle- free QR code clearance system between Johor and Singapore.

He also expressed optimism about the potential benefits of adopting the clearance system.

"The implementation, will definitely contribute towards turning JS-SEZ into an integrated zone by allowing a congestion free movement of good and people.

"Other collaboration efforts will also support Singapore businesses to establish their presence in here through a streamlined process provided by a centralised business and investment service centre in Johor, which will simplify the application procedures for approvals and licenses," he said.

He added the initiative will strengthen ties on various fronts, including cultural exchange and other social aspects, that would contribute to an overall improvement in competitiveness and business ecosystems.

The proposed passport-free QR code clearance system aims to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, by providing a faster and convenient travel-method.

It is expected to streamline customs and immigration processes, facilitating swift cross-border movement.
