Fatal motorcycle crash on new year's eve kills teen

AYER KEROH: The joy of two friends celebrating new year's eve ended in tragedy when one of them was killed after their motorcycles crashed into each other.

Melaka Tengah police chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, said that the accident happened around 4.40am on Jalan Tun Abdul Razak when the victims, riding a Yamaha Y15ZR and Yamaha 135LC respectively, were heading home to Taman Muzaffar Shah.

According to him, the deceased was Mohamad Farhan Hakimi Mohd Rasidi, 19, a Form 6 student at SMK Munshi Abdullah. Meanwhile, his friend, a Form 5 student at SMK Ayer Keroh, aged 17, escaped unharmed.

"Investigations revealed that both victims were riding in the same direction towards the Taman Muzaffar Shah traffic light from the Kota Cemerlang flyover, with Mohamad Farhan Hakimi ahead in the left lane.

"The accident occurred when Mohamad Farhan Hakimi suddenly changed lanes to the right, attempting to overtake his friend, causing their motorcycles to collide, leading to him skidding off the road, falling, and succumbing to his injuries on the spot," he said in a statement today.

Christopher mentioned that the deceased's friend successfully controlled his motorcycle, preventing it from skidding and avoiding any injuries.

"Further investigations are ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 to determine the cause of the accident, and the body has been sent to the Melaka Hospital Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination.

"There is no closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the accident site, and we ask for any witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation," he added.
