400 'Mat Rempits' rounded up on New Year's Eve in Alor Star

ALOR STAR: Police have thwarted over 400 'Mat Rempits' from engaging in illegal street racing in the city centre during the 2024 New Year's Eve celebration earlier today. All of the 'Mat Rempits' aged between 12 and 25, were stopped at around 3.40am at the Kepala Batas traffic light intersection near here.

Kota Star district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir said the arrests were conducted during Ops Samseng Jalanan during New Year's Eve. "Surveillance by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 1am successfully tracked the movement of a large group of motorcyclists entering the city center and engaging in dangerous racing activities.

"In response, the operation team strategically positioned themselves at various locations around the Kepala Batas traffic light intersection before conducting a raid at 3.40 am."The motorcycle group, initially startled by police presence, attempted to escape but failed as all exit routes were surrounded and completely cut off," he said when contacted today.

Shukri said that a total of 430 motorcycles with 478 individuals were inspected during the operation. "340 summonses were issued for various traffic violations. The involved offences include driving without a license, vehicle modification violations. 70 motorcycles were also seized," he added.

Shukri also said that two tested positive for methamphetamine and were then taken to the district police headquarters for further action."Both are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952," he added.
