PM condemns attack in Iran, calls for mastermind to be brought to justice

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today condemned the attacks in Kerman, Iran, and called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.

In a statement, Anwar said he was deeply saddened by the reports of several bomb explosions that had happened in the region of the Islamic Republic of Iran that claimed almost a hundred innocent lives and injured over two hundred others.

"Malaysia strongly denies, condemns, and unequivocally condemns any form of violence against the innocent.

"For almost three months, the world has witnessed Israel's massacre of innocent people in Palestine and most recently in Lebanon two days ago.

"Malaysia extends condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and its citizens, and Malaysia also mourns and stands in solidarity," Anwar said.

He also urges that the masterminds behind this violent act be brought to trial.

"In this new year, Malaysia seeks to invite the world to join in opposing the culture of violence and greed and to save global humanity."

Yesterday, At least 103 people were killed in Iran as two bombs in quick succession struck a crowd commemorating slain general Qassem Soleimani on the anniversary of his killing, state media reported.

The blasts, which state television had called a terrorist attack, came with tensions running high in the Middle East a day after Hamas' number two leader, Saleh al-Arouri , an ally of Iran, was killed in a drone attack on a Beirut southern suburb which Lebanese officials blamed on Israel.

The blasts stuck near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani's southern hometown where he is buried, as supporters gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of his killing in a US drone strike just outside Baghdad airport.

Kerman's deputy governor, Rahman Jalali, said the explosions were a "terrorist attack."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
