Commissioners of Oaths association lodges police report over video by YouTuber

KUALA LUMPUR: The Association of Commissioners of Oaths Malaysia (Pesuma) has lodged a police report over a YouTube video describing alleged unlawful practices involving commissioners for oaths.

The video titled 'MB Kedah Sasau Langkah Dubai Gagal' uploaded by account holder 'Kucing Tanah' had also impinged the credibility of commissioners for oaths in Malaysia said Pesuma chairman Yusrizal Zainol Abidin.

"Pesuma is very much affected and concerned with the statement and allegations made by the YouTube influencer, who had touched on the process and fees for the preparation or affirmation of statutory declarations.

"This (the video) appears to amount to an attack against the credibility, accountability, and integrity of fellow commissioner for oaths who are duly appointed by the Chief Justice," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times.

Yusrizal added that in the video, the influencer had claimed that the stamp of the commissioner for oath could be obtained with only RM5 and that an SD worth RM5 could be used to change the government.

"The fee is not RM5 and all SDs are legal documents subject to the Statutory Declaration Act 1960. (And) he (the influencer) had trivialised and smeared the legal system and SD process with his allegations.

"Hence, if such allegations were true, we would like the police to investigate which commissioners for oaths are doing such things and charge the RM5 amount."

At the same time, Yusrizal also hoped the police conduct a detailed investigation into the statements and allegations made by the influencer.

"The YouTuber must be held fully accountable for the statements and allegations made by him recklessly, without verification and without referring to facts and existing laws.

"We firmly state that any statements, allegations, comments or words that degrade and belittle the functions and duties of commissioners for oaths must be immediately stopped, and an open apology must be issued by the individuals involved.

"We will not hesitate to take further legal action if this matter persists."

Meanwhile, checks by the New Straits Times found that the video had been deleted from the YouTube account.
