Myanmar national busted with fake UNHCR Card

JERTEH: A Myanmar national was arrested by the Terengganu Immigration Department for possessing a fake United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card during 'Op Kutip dan Op Belanja' in Jerteh, here, yesterday.

The man in his twenties was among 154 foreign nationals detained during the operation held for 12 hours starting at 7am yesterday.

After inspections were conducted, a total of 24 foreign nationals, including Myanmar citizens, faced action under the Immigration Act and were sent to the Ajil Immigration Depot.

"I was charged RM150 to obtain the UNHCR card from a friend in Johor Baru before coming to Terengganu in October last year. I did not know that the card I obtained was fake," claimed the Myanmar national when interviewed.

Meanwhile, state Immigration Department director, Azhar Abd Hamid, confirmed that the Myanmar national's UNHCR card was fake, and the real owner of the card is a woman.

"The Myanmar national is detained for further investigation, and we will extend the case to the Immigration Headquarters in Putrajaya.

"Out of the 154 foreign nationals, including four detained children, a total of 25 individuals were detained under the Immigration Act, namely Section 6(1)(c) for having no identification documents, 15(1)(c) for overstaying, and Regulation 39(b) for violating passport conditions," he said.
