Homeless congregate at Kota Baru park for free food

KOTA BARU: Taman Hijau is famous for its selection of food and snacks sold by traders.

However, during the fasting month, the park, in Jalan Tengku Semerak, attracts about 100 homeless and poor people daily who come to get free food.

One of the recipients, Zainab Hussin, 38, said they would gather at the park after 6pm every day.

"Many of us are poor and cannot afford to buy food for our family.

"We were told that during Ramadan, many generous people, as well astraderswho operate bazaars, want to donate food to us.

"They will bring us food and juices for us to take home," said Zainab, who works as cleaner at a hypermarket.

A trishaw rider, who wanted to be known only as Pak Man, said he and his friends would get at least two packets of food from the donors.

"We do not know the donors but some operate stalls at the Ramadan bazaar near Sultan Muhammad lV Stadium.

"Getting this free meal is a blessing for us. Hopefully, they will get a reward from Allah."

Yesterday evening, some motorists had parked their vehicles near the park and were distributing food.
