Melaka promotes sustainability with weekend trash-to-cash programme

MELAKA: Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), in a Facebook post on Feb 6, has announced a trash-to-cash programme called "Anda Kitar, Kami Bayar."

The programme, happening on Feb 17, aims to convert household waste into economic gains for the residents of Melaka, promoting environmental stewardship alongside financial incentives.

From 9am to 12pm, Dataran Bandaraya MBMB will become a centre for green trading as citizens bring in their recyclable waste to be exchanged for cash.

During the event, a range of discarded items will be accepted, enabling residents to clear out their homes of unused and unwanted goods while earning some money.

Used cooking oil is one of the most sought-after items, fetching a price of RM2.80 per kg.

The programme is also ready to accept a wide spectrum of 3R goods, ranging from plastic bottles and aluminium to paper and cardboard, rewarding sellers with competitive rates that reflect the quality and type of recyclable materials.

Moreover, in a bid to tackle the growing challenge of electronic waste, the programme encourages the disposal of e-waste products like outdated washing machines, printers, and refrigerators, offering a rate of RM 0.20 per kg.

Also, the programme will extend to fabric items, including worn or well-loved clothes, shoes, soft toys, and household textiles, all at a rate of RM0.10 per kg.

This event will provide a platform for responsible waste disposal and educate the public on the value and impact of recycling.

Residents are encouraged to participate in this eco-conscious initiative, contributing to the environmental health of the planet and the community.
