Community garden programme launched in Melaka for autistic individuals

MELAKA: The National Autism Society Malaysia (Nasom) in Bukit Peringgit has become the site of the latest community garden initiative as part of the Melaka Low Carbon City (MLCC) Programme.

The city council, in a Facebook post on Jan 24, said that the initiative to create a community garden within Nasom will greatly benefit individuals with autism by diversifying their activities.

"Gardening serves as a beneficial social approach for individuals on the autism spectrum, fostering sensory integration and motor skills, reducing anxiety, encouraging teamwork, educating about homegrown foods, and honing the ability to follow instructions," the post said.

Attendees of the programme were also treated to an exhibition, sales of students' handcrafted products, and a cooking demonstration of waffle-making.

These activities are aimed at generating income for the students, showcasing their talents and the practical skills they have acquired.

The programme was inaugurated by Datuk Hajah Kalsom Nordin, the executive councillor for Development, Women, Family and Community, with representatives from the Nasom and the city council also in attendance.
