Elderly woman sets kitchen on fire toasting bread; now hospitalised

GEORGETOWN: An elderly woman was rushed to hospital after suffering burns to her right arm in a house fire at Midland Court Apartment, here, this morning.

In the incident at around 8.30am, the 79-year-old victim, who lives alone, was said to be toasting bread in the kitchen.

Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station operations officer, PBKII Mohd Hairi Fazzil, said a team of firefighters was dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 8.40am regarding the incident.

"Upon arrival, the fire was found to have occurred in the kitchen area of a house measuring 10x10 sq ft with an estimated fire damage of 10 per cent.

"There was an elderly female victim who suffered injuries to her right arm.

"The victim was said to be toasting bread using a toaster, and it is believed that the fire started from there," he said when contacted here today.

Mohd Hairi said the victim was taken to Penang Hospital for further treatment.

He said the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation.
