Firefighters rush to save 6 children trapped in apartment fire

PETALING JAYA: Six siblings were nearly killed after being trapped in a fire at a house in Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai here, before being rescued by the fire brigade this morning.

It is understood that all the children, aged between two and 11 years old, were left inside the locked house because their parents were at the hospital.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, said they received the incident call from a neighbour at 11.15am.

He said a team from the Sungai Buloh Fire and Rescue Station with seven officers and members rushed to the scene.

"Upon arrival, the team had to cut the iron grille of the front door to enter the house. The fire involved a sofa in the living room.

"The team immediately extinguished the fire and found six children consisting of four girls and two twin boys inside the house," he said in a statement today.

Mukhlis said, however, the fire did not involve the building structure.

He said, based on initial information, the children were left at home because their mother had taken their father to a nearby hospital for heart disease treatment.

He said all the children were safe and had been handed over to their parents.

Idaman Apartment is also the family residence of the murdered 6-year-old autistic boy, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin. His body was found near a river close to his residence at 10pm on Dec 6, the day after he was reported missing.
