MACC clears Prime Minister's Dept in NGO fund probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) announced that they have not discovered any evidence suggesting that funds allocated to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) were misappropriated to benefit specific individuals within the Prime Minister's Department.

Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said this conclusion was reached after a thorough investigation by the assigned officer.

The person, said Azam, was only summoned by the MACC to have her statement recorded.

"We have conducted our investigation into the case. Based on the reports from the investigation officer in charge, there were no indicators which suggested that the funds were returned to certain quarters in the Prime Minister's Department," he told reporters after attending the 10th Certified Integrity Officer Programme Convocation ceremony here today.

Asked if the funds came from the government, Azam said the monies were disbursed following the application to the said NGO.

"And the funds were channelled directly to the account of the said NGO," he said.

Although Azam did not mention any names, it is understood he was referring to the case surrounding an NGO linked to controversial blogger, Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah better known as Ratu Naga.

It was reported that Syarul Ema Rena's husband, Ezad Zainal on Feb 16 confirmed that his wife was detained by the MACC.

The husband said five officers, claiming to be from MACC raided the couple's house and arrested the 42-year-old.

On a separate matter, Azam confirmed that the commission has completed its investigation paper into a case involving the Kedah Football Association (KFA).

"The outcome of our investigation into the case has been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor at the commission. It has yet to reach the Attorney-General Chambers," he said.

It was reported last month that the MACC has detained KFA chief executive officer Zulkifli Che Haron to assist in the investigation of a corruption case involving RM6 million. (hyperlink: https://www.nst.com.my/sports/football/2024/01/997908/kedah-football-ass...)

The matter was confirmed by KFA vice president Muhamad Radhi Mat Din.

The MACC had also remanded three individuals, including two consultants aged between 40 and 60, to assist in the investigation of a case involving solicitation and acceptance of bribes amounting to RM6 million.

The alleged corrupt funds are believed to be a reward for helping a company owner secure construction project tenders for a racecourse and projects to manage, operate, and maintain five water retention facilities in Kedah.
