Govt MPs told to focus debates on people's issues

CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants government members of parliament to address the people's concerns when the Dewan Rakyat convenes tomorrow.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said government MPs discussed the matter during the pre-session meeting this morning.

"There are several new issues and bills that must be attended to, and the prime minister hopes that in this session, MPs will argue based on facts and research.

"This will give a better image to the government… We know that the opposition will raise many old and new issues, but we will manage them as best as we can," Zahid said after officiating the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority's (Risda) Penggerak Wanita programme, here today.

Present were Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Zahid said the prime minister also advised MPs that this year and beyond, the government should address the people's issues like legislation, food and ringgit depreciation.

"This must be explained and new efforts must be made, especially involving the investments totalling RM 329 billion (that the government had attracted).

"This will provide jobs and increase the country's exports, and indirectly, the issue of the fall of the ringgit will be overcome in the near future," he said.

Tomorrow's parliamentary session runs till March 27, and will be opened by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

The prime minister had announced that Malaysia had attracted RM329.5 billion in investments last year, the highest in the country's history and 23 per cent higher than in 2022.

Anwar said foreign investments made up 57.2 per cent of the total while domestic investment made up 42.8 per cent.
