Anwar urges govt MPs to have good attendance and to prepare well for debates

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded the unity government's members of parliament (MPs) to have good attendance during the Dewan Rakyat sitting starting tomorrow.

Anwar, who is finance minister, also reminded the MPs to ensure that their debates had substance and quality, as well as for them to maintain decorum,

He delivered the reminder to ministers, deputy ministers and government MPs at the pre-session briefing of Dewan Rakyat at Seri Perdana today.

The briefing started at 9.30am and lasted for about three hours.

This was told by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

"The briefing is complete and the prime minister reminded MPs to have a good attendance.

"He (Anwar) also wants the MPs to debate with quality and substance, aside from wanting them to be on their best behaviour."

Alexander said all MPs had received a briefing on parliamentary proceedings from Minister in Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Anwar had expressed hope that MPs would be well prepared for debates.

"He also wants MPs to voice and address issues in their constituencies."

Tomorrow's parliamentary session runs till March 27.

The 19-day session will be officiated by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and will followed by a royal address.

MPs are expected to debate amendments to the citizenship issue and also amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
